It took Kyrie Irving only a few seconds to remind everyone what he can do. After 586 days away from the court, the former Cavs guard returns with the Mavericks and immediately scores 17 points

After 586 days away from an NBA court, Kyrie Irving finally returned to action with the Dallas Mavericks. The point guard, sidelined since 2025 with a torn ACL, made his season debut in the second Preseason game against the Houston Rockets, finishing with 17 points in 22 minutes.

His return immediately produced a special moment. On Dallas’ first offensive possession, coach Dusty May drew up a play specifically for Irving: a pass from Cooper Flagg, a baseline drive and a reverse layup. The perfect way to break the ice after such a long absence.

There were so many emotions before the game. I’m grateful to Dusty for calling the first play for me. I had already decided I was going to attack the rim. I saw a little space along the baseline, and it felt good to score right away

Returning to the court represents an important step for Irving, who, in addition to the physical recovery, also had to deal with the mental challenges that come with such a long injury absence. His decision to attack the basket immediately, without hesitation, was an encouraging first sign.

I want to give a big shoutout to the Mavs fans: we’ve been very patient, and they’ve been patient with me. I can’t wait to get back home, play a few games in front of them and get back into rhythm… hear that crowd roar again

The game against Houston also offered a first glimpse of the chemistry between Irving and Cooper Flagg, who is coming off a season in which he won Rookie of the Year. The two had never shared the floor in an NBA game before, and how they fit together will be one of the most interesting storylines to follow during the Mavericks’ new season.
