Trae Young has decided to commit his future to the Washington Wizards. Appearing on WatchGuys, the four-time All-Star explained that his new four-year, $212 million contract was driven by his connection to the city and the warm welcome he received.

It’s an opportunity to extend my time here in Washington. I’ve felt great since I arrived. The people are amazing. I knew I wanted to stay longer, and the opportunity came up

Young declined his $49 million player option to sign the new deal, which also includes a player option for the fourth year.

After arriving from Atlanta in January in a trade that sent CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert to the Hawks, Young has become one of the cornerstones of Washington’s rebuilding project. The subsequent additions of Anthony Davis and AJ Dybantsa, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, have strengthened the team’s ambitions as the Wizards look ready to make their mark.

Young also praised the composure with which the rookie is handling expectations.

Being the No. 1 pick comes with a lot of pressure, but you wouldn’t know it from being around him

During the interview, Young also explained his decision to wear jersey No. 3, a number he first wore during his freshman year of high school. He mentioned Chris Paul and Allen Iverson as influences but named Steve Nash as his favorite player of all time.

Washington will open its regular season on October 21 against the Milwaukee Bucks, marking the beginning of Young’s first full season with the Wizards.
