Paul George sets Celtics debut record: “I’m having fun”
Despite the Celtics’ loss, Paul George had a debut to remember: 38 points, a franchise record and plenty of praise from Mazzulla
Paul George made a record-breaking debut with the Boston Celtics, even though it didn’t end in a win. In the 121-113 loss to the Detroit Pistons, the former Clippers and 76ers star scored 38 points, setting a franchise record for the most points scored by a player in his Celtics debut.
His performance was also highlighted by an impressive defensive effort that earned praise from Joe Mazzulla, who was particularly pleased with how naturally George fit into the Celtics’ system.
He looked comfortable right away. He was able to create advantages for both himself and his teammates

Paul George on the Celtics’ new offense: “It’s a fun challenge”
Despite his record-breaking debut, George explained that adapting to Boston’s style of play requires a significant adjustment compared to what he’s been used to throughout his career.
It’s a change that, at least for now, he seems to be thoroughly enjoying.
Throughout my career, I’ve been used to having the ball in my hands, being the focal point of the offense and knowing exactly where I was going to get the ball. The great thing about Joe’s offense is that I can be anywhere on the court, and there are no set plays. It’s about reading the game, thinking and making decisions. And with a team that has such a high basketball IQ, it’s fun trying to figure out how to be myself, find my rhythm and play at my own pace, even when starting from different spots on the floor

That adjustment will inevitably take time, but the early signs are extremely encouraging. George has already shown that he can make an impact without constantly needing the ball in his hands, taking advantage of the spacing and opportunities created by Mazzulla’s system.
I have to figure out what the defense is giving me, adjust and keep learning. But I’m having fun. At the end of the day, it’s kind of how I’ve always envisioned playing

Of course, celebrating the record with a win would have been even better. But for his first game with an entirely new team, George could hardly have asked for much more from an individual standpoint.
