Wembanyama disappoints in season opener: “I wasn’t myself”
A rough season opener for Wembanyama against the Thunder: just one made field goal and plenty of frustration. The French star explains what went wrong
It was a difficult season opener for Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs, who fell 116-104 to the Oklahoma City Thunder (featuring a surprising Aday Mara) in their first regular-season game. The French star finished shooting just 1-of-13 from the field and 0-of-4 from three, admitting he played with too much hesitation.
I need to get back to playing the basketball I enjoy. This isn’t the basketball I love. I have no reason to hesitate, it’s that simple. I play well when I’m having fun. I missed a lot of shots I normally make. I was hesitant, maybe I was overthinking things
Victor Wembanyama
Wemby still contributed 12 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 6 blocks, scoring nearly all of his points at the free-throw line, where he went 10-of-12. He made a significant defensive impact, but couldn’t shake the feeling that he wasn’t playing like his usual self.
I’m always myself, but tonight, for a number of reasons, I didn’t feel like myself
Victor Wembanyama
Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson, however, rejected the idea that the loss was primarily due to the French star’s struggles.
I think everyone struggled more or less the same way. I know his field-goal percentage will stand out, but we all contributed to this loss
Mitch Johnson
There’s no reason to worry after just 48 minutes of regular-season basketball. The Spurs have several things to work on, while Wembanyama will look to regain his rhythm and confidence. There’s certainly no shortage of time.
