Cunningham has found two new allies

Cade Cunningham praises Duncan Robinson and Javonte Green after the Pistons’ win over the Celtics. Their three-point shooting made the difference

The Detroit Pistons opened the season by overcoming a 22-point deficit to secure a 121-113 win over the Boston Celtics. Leading the way as usual was Cade Cunningham, who made sure to share the credit with his team’s shooters after the game.

Duncan Robinson finished with 21 points and five three-pointers, while Javonte Green added five more threes off the bench. Their contributions were crucial in stretching the defense and creating space for Cunningham, Jalen Duren and Ausar Thompson.

It’s a blessing. They make my life easier, and Jalen Duren’s and Ausar Thompson’s lives easier too. We have to keep building our chemistry, but that will come as the season goes on

Trailing by 13 points at halftime and falling behind by as many as 22, Detroit turned things around thanks to its defense, ranked 2nd in the NBA last season, while also rediscovering its shooting touch. Having multiple threats on the perimeter forced Boston (despite a record-breaking performance from Paul George) to respect Detroit’s shooters, opening up more space to attack the paint and find teammates near the rim. That combination allowed the Pistons to complete the comeback and secure their first win of the season.
