A video of LeBron James during the national anthem before the matchup between the Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden has sparked a new controversy involving Donald Trump.

In the clip, which went viral on social media, LeBron appears to mime a golf swing and a basketball shot while standing alongside his teammates during the national anthem.

Trump also saw the video and shared it on Truth Social, accompanied by a scathing attack on the Sixers star:

While listening to our national anthem, LeBron James disrespects our country! I’ve said it from the beginning: he’s worthless, a TOTAL DISGRACE. LeBron James should apologize to all those great American warriors and heroes who died for the American flag and everything our country stands for!

Before Philadelphia’s home opener against Cleveland, Nick Nurse was also asked to comment on the situation. The Sixers coach, however, chose not to fuel the controversy, explaining that he wanted to keep the team focused on basketball.

I think it falls under the other outside noise we’ve already dealt with. What matters to me is getting the guys onto the practice court, into the film room and then into games. Their focus and approach have been excellent

LeBron James’ response came only after the game against the Cavaliers. Asked by reporters about the U.S. president’s accusations, King James brushed it all off with a few words and a healthy dose of sarcasm:

Must have been a slow news day at the office, you know. Really slow news day

LeBron James

After all, there has been bad blood between LeBron and Trump for quite some time. Over the years, the two have traded criticism, particularly over the NBA player’s political and social stances. This time, though, LeBron chose not to fuel the discussion any further, responding with a simple quip.
