The Thunder’s win takes a back seat. Jalen Williams leaves the court on a stretcher, and all of Oklahoma City holds its breath

Hands covering his face, teammates in disbelief and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander bent over beside him, his face buried in his jersey. Those were the images that marked the closing moments of the Oklahoma City Thunder’s 108-101 home win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

With just over a minute remaining, Jalen Williams suffered a horrific injury to his lower left leg, requiring immediate attention from the medical staff before he was taken off the court on a stretcher.

The incident occurred with 1:14 remaining in the fourth quarter, when Williams was fouled while attacking the basket. As he landed, his left leg buckled under his weight and his foot twisted sideways at an unnatural angle.

Williams immediately recognized the severity of the situation, bringing his hands first to his mouth and then to his head. A staff member quickly covered the injured area with a towel as medical personnel came onto the court.

The game was stopped for about five minutes. As Williams was taken off on a stretcher, the crowd gave him a lengthy standing ovation, which he acknowledged with two thumbs up.

No official diagnosis has been announced yet. Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said the team would receive further updates Monday morning.

Asked about the team’s emotional state, the coach offered a brief response:

We’re not doing well at all

The potential ankle injury

The footage immediately raised fears of a serious injury. According to physician Brian Sutterer, who analyzed the ankle’s movement, the mechanism could be consistent with a dislocation accompanied by a fracture.

When the toes are pushed toward the shin, the ankle joint locks up. That kind of movement can cause at least a dislocation and, in most cases, a fracture as well. You can have a fracture without a dislocation or vice versa, but the two injuries often occur together

This remains an assessment based on how the injury occurred, rather than a confirmed diagnosis. Tests and updates from the Thunder will be needed to determine the full extent of the injury.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in tears: “He’ll come back stronger”

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was among the most shaken players, struggling to hold back his emotions even during his postgame television interview.

I feel terrible for him. Obviously, it’s going to be tough to play without a player like that, but he’s not gone forever. He’ll come back stronger. We believe that. We just have to hold it down until he returns

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

His teammate then spoke about how much Williams loves basketball and competition, noting that he has already faced several difficult stretches.

He loves to play, loves to compete. That’s who he is. He’s been really unlucky with what’s happened to him so far, but he has everything it takes to get through this, too

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

Oklahoma City returns to action Monday against the Phoenix Suns, but right now, the result inevitably takes a back seat.

The hope is that the tests bring less serious news than the footage suggests.
