Sergio De Larrea’s NBA opportunity comes with Flagg’s injury

Cooper Flagg’s injury opens new opportunities for Sergio De Larrea. The talented Spaniard has a chance to earn a place in the Mavericks’ rotation

Sergio De Larrea Dallas Mavericks

In a league shaped by recurring tactical revolutions that push role players to develop new skills to remain useful within their teams’ systems, the principle of seizing the moment remains essential.

Making the most of opportunities created by a trade – and especially by injuries to teammates – can be the fine line between a brief appearance in the league and a long, successful NBA career.

To Sergio De Larrea, a 20-year-old already accustomed to progressing ahead of schedule, that opportunity could arrive right now. After leaving Europe following a EuroLeague Final Four appearance and a starring role in a Liga ACB title run, he could benefit from Dallas Mavericks star Cooper Flagg’s absence.

A Point Guard in a Point Forward’s body

There’s no getting around it: a point guard who stands nearly 6-foot-7 and combines the essential playmaking skills, from ballhandling to getting teammates involved, with the ability to absorb contact and finish at the rim will always get an opportunity in today’s NBA – and tomorrow’s.

With a point forward who already belongs among the league’s elite sidelined, De Larrea appears to be Jason Kidd’s first choice to step in.

Basketball IQ and leadership

He may not offer Kyrie Irving’s endless repertoire of one-on-one moves – Irving’s chapter in Texas could end before February’s trade deadline – or Cooper Flagg’s explosiveness even against a set defense. But in his third NBA game, against San Antonio, De Larrea immediately showed important qualities for taking the reins of the offense.

More than the speed of his execution, what impressed was how quickly he could read the game and make the right decision. That was the foundation of his 21 points and 4 assists. And he’s only getting started.

The Mavs’ european sensation

When predicting potential sleepers in the later stages of the most recent draft, many analysts quickly identified De Larrea as an intriguing name. Partly, if not primarily, because of where he landed.

The lasting imprint left by Dirk Nowitzki and, more recently, the rise of Luka Doncic have established Dallas in the public imagination as an ideal place for talent from the European basketball system to develop and thrive.

With all the necessary distinctions, the Spaniard will try to find his place in a tradition established by two generational talents.
