Cameron Boozer records first NBA triple-double: “Took him long enough”
Boozer becomes the second-youngest rookie ever to record a triple-double. The Grizzlies remain unbeaten, and Iisalo has a little fun
Five games were all Cameron Boozer needed to write his first chapter in NBA history. The Memphis Grizzlies rookie recorded his first career triple-double in a 124-103 win over the Portland Trail Blazers, becoming the second-youngest rookie ever to accomplish the feat.
The achievement pleased coach Tuomas Iisalo, although the Finnish coach found a rather unusual way to assess his player’s performance.
Took him long enough. It was already his fifth game!
Tuomas Iisalo
The joke says plenty about the expectations surrounding the 19-year-old, whom Memphis selected third overall in the most recent draft and who has already become a key figure in the Grizzlies’ excellent start.
Against the Blazers, Boozer finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists in just 28 minutes, shooting 6-for-10 from the field and, notably, 4-for-5 from three.
It was a complete performance in which the Duke product once again showed he can contribute well beyond simply scoring.
His ability to read the game and involve teammates proved decisive for Memphis, which took control in the second half after a competitive opening half to secure its fifth consecutive win.
Five wins in five games, a perfect start that has coincided with Boozer’s growth as he becomes increasingly comfortable facing far more experienced players.
Despite the historic milestone, the Duke product remained understated afterward, noting how much of the season still lies ahead.
It’s cool, but I’m going to keep working. The season just started. We still have 77 games ahead of us. There’s a lot left to do

Boozer also highlighted the challenges Portland presented, particularly in containing its primary offensive threats.
They’re a tough team to guard. Ja Morant, Damian Lillard and Deni Avdija are a difficult trio to contain. In the end, though, we responded with toughness, rebounding and some good defense. We also used our size. Isaiah Stewart and Zach Edey really helped us. It’s a lot of fun

Meanwhile, Iisalo can enjoy a rookie making an impact at both ends of the floor and a team still unbeaten through five games.
