Injuries complicate the Thunder’s NBA title chase

The Thunder keep winning, but Draymond Green is already looking ahead to the playoffs. Without Williams and Wallace, OKC can’t contend for an NBA championship

Continuing to win in the regular season is one thing. Making it all the way to the NBA Finals is another. For Draymond Green, the Oklahoma City Thunder can still do the first extremely well, but the second could become much more difficult following the injuries to Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace.

OKC opened the season with 4 wins and one loss, reaffirming its status as one of the league’s most reliable teams. Even the absences don’t appear to have disrupted a system that has shown in recent years it can bring the best out of practically every player available.

Yet Green believes there’s a point at which even roster depth may not be enough.

On his podcast, the Golden State Warriors forward explained why the latest injuries could radically alter the Thunder’s ambitions.

Losing two starters on the same night is incredible. They’ll remain one of the best teams in the NBA. They’re a well-oiled machine. But at certain stages of the playoffs, those absences get exposed

Draymond Green: “OKC can’t win the title without Williams and Wallace”

Green knows the difference between winning plenty of regular-season games and facing a playoff series against a team capable of studying and exploiting every weakness.

Oklahoma City, for example, maintained an extremely high level last season despite Williams’ lengthy absence. Its recent win over Phoenix confirmed that the group still has the resources to remain competitive.

But for Green, that isn’t the point.

They can’t compete for a championship without their second-best player and their best perimeter defender

He is referring primarily to the importance of Jalen Williams, the team’s second offensive option, and Cason Wallace, whose defensive pressure on opposing perimeter players is essential.

They are two players who are difficult to replace, especially when the competition gets tougher and every possession becomes crucial.

Injuries complicate the Thunder’s playoff plans

The recovery timelines are another concern for Oklahoma City. Jalen Williams underwent surgery after suffering a fractured left fibula and dislocated left ankle. Even if he returns late in the season, he would have little time to regain his conditioning and game rhythm before the playoffs.

The situation remains unclear for Cason Wallace, who has a torn labrum in his left shoulder. A more precise recovery timeline will be available only after surgery.

Roster depth is a major asset, but only up to a point. Because when rotations tighten and the level of competition rises, not every player can be replaced. Not even on a team as well constructed as Oklahoma City.
