Wembanyama puts the NBA on notice: He wants the MVP
After a difficult start, Wembanyama has found another gear. He dominates against the Timberwolves and makes his ambitions for this season clear
Victor Wembanyama has no intention of hiding his ambitions. After finishing third in last season’s MVP race, the Frenchman has already identified his next goal. And judging by his play, he wants to reach it as soon as possible.
In a preview of an interview with 60 Minutes, Wemby was asked about last season’s MVP award. His response was direct:
I should win it this year
Victor Wembanyama
The statement comes as the San Antonio Spurs big man is once again showing his full potential. Against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Wembanyama scored a season-high 43 points and added 5 blocks, leading San Antonio to a 121-111 victory.
His performance also fired up the home crowd, which broke into “WemVP” chants.
When he plays with his teammates, he creates enormous problems for opponents. The best players in the league become almost impossible to stop when they get others involved. He’s made significant progress in a short time
Victor Wembanyama
Wembanyama wants to turn that growth into individual recognition, too.
In 2025-26, he finished third in MVP voting, behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic, while winning Defensive Player of the Year.
Now the goal is to take another step.
