Doncic dominates, then “nods off”: “I want to go home”

Doncic records his fourth 40-point game in his last five. Giannis Antetokounmpo praises him as one of the greatest scorers in NBA history

Luka Doncic vs Miami Heat

Luka Doncic keeps scoring at an incredible rate, and even his opponents seem to be running out of words to describe him. The latest to offer high praise was Giannis Antetokounmpo, who made a particularly bold comparison after his Miami Heat lost to the Los Angeles Lakers.

He’s one of the best scorers to ever play basketball, if not the best

Giannis Antetokounmpo

When a reporter asked whether he meant right now, Giannis quickly clarified.

I’m not talking about right now. I’m talking about all time. I think some people are afraid to say it, but Luka has to be considered among the best ever

Doncic’s mind-boggling numbers

Antetokounmpo’s comments followed another extraordinary performance from the Slovenian star, who finished with 42 points, 13 assists and 7 rebounds in the Lakers’ 138-117 win over Miami.

It was Doncic’s fourth game with at least 40 points in his last five, a stretch in which he is averaging 43.4 points while shooting 53.2% from the field and 44.7% from three.

Those numbers have raised his season average to an NBA-leading 38.8 points.

And while comparisons with the greatest scorers in history might seem exaggerated, the statistics tell an intriguing story: at 29.32 career points per game, Doncic trails only Michael Jordan (30.12) and Wilt Chamberlain (30.07).

Against the Heat, he also reached another distinctive milestone, becoming the first Lakers player since Kobe Bryant in 2007 to score at least 20 first-half points in five consecutive games.

But it isn’t just about scoring. Miami tried to contain him with constant double-teams, with little success. Doncic read the floor easily, finding teammates and contributing to the team’s 39 assists, the Lakers’ highest total since JJ Redick became head coach.

We’re playing really well offensively. A lot of the credit goes to Luka, his ability to put pressure on defenses and create opportunities for everyone. He can score in every way and make every type of pass

JJ Redick

Quentin Grimes also admitted he had never seen anything like it up close.

It feels like any shot he takes, even the craziest ones, is going in. I don’t think I’ve ever played with anyone who gives you that feeling every time he shoots

Doncic Just Wants to Go Home

Perhaps the most curious part is that, while everyone keeps talking about his performances, Doncic seems to take them in stride. After leading the Lakers to their second consecutive win and completing a back-to-back sweep of the Raptors and Heat, the Slovenian star wasn’t particularly interested in dwelling on his numbers.

Asked how he felt after another standout night, he answered simply:

I just want to go home

Luka Doncic

A brief response, before stressing that his greatest satisfaction still comes from seeing the Lakers win.

When we win, everything feels so much better. But of course, personally, it feels good, too

Luka Doncic

At 6-2, Los Angeles has climbed to fourth in the Western Conference. And while Giannis is already placing him in the conversation about the greatest scorers ever, Doncic keeps doing what he does best: scoring, setting up teammates and leading the Lakers.

Then, preferably, heading home to rest.
