Kristaps Porzingis Golden State Warriors

Kristaps Porzingis is stepping away from basketball indefinitely. The Golden State Warriors center announced his decision in a statement shared on social media, explaining that he needs to prioritize his health after dealing with physical issues that have kept him sidelined since the start of the 2026/27 NBA season.

It’s a major decision that raises plenty of questions about what comes next. The Latvian big man has not officially announced his retirement, but there is currently no timetable for a potential return, or any certainty that he will play again.

I was really looking forward to playing this season with this group, but when I started increasing my workload, my body didn’t respond the way I expected. I’m doing well, but I know what it takes to compete at the level I expect from myself, and right now I’m not where I want to be

Porzingis and the Warriors: A Journey That Never Really Started

The former Celtics big man signed a two-year, $40 million contract extension with Golden State over the summer, but has yet to make his official debut for the franchise.

After attending Jimmy Butler’s minicamp in San Diego, Porzingis did not report to the Warriors’ training camp in Hawaii. During the preseason, he met with the team’s medical director, Rick Celebrini, and general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. to discuss his situation, but the parties were unable to find a solution that would allow him to return to action.

Another issue has also emerged in recent days, this time involving his contract.

According to reports from the United States, Golden State has reportedly stopped paying Porzingis his $20 million salary for the 2026/27 season, determining that he is not rendering services to the team.

For now, Porzingis has reportedly not challenged the decision through the NBA Players Association.

Instead, his statement emphasized his willingness to work with the organization toward a solution.

In this situation, I want to show the utmost respect for the Golden State Warriors and work together with them to find a solution that makes sense. I want to thank my family and the people closest to me for always being there, as well as everyone who has supported me

What’s Next? A Trade Could Be Coming Soon

Porzingis’ announcement doesn’t necessarily mean his time with Golden State is over without a trade.

In fact, according to ClutchPoints, the Warriors are already exploring potential deals with other franchises, and a trade could materialize within the next 30 to 40 days.

The biggest factor is financial.

Porzingis is owed $20 million for the 2026/27 season, while only $3 million of his salary is guaranteed for 2027/28. That contract structure could make him an attractive trade target for teams looking to create salary cap flexibility.

Another possibility would be a contract buyout following a potential trade, with Porzingis reportedly willing to give up a significant portion of the money remaining on his deal.

For now, however, these remain potential scenarios rather than finalized agreements.

Retirement isn’t official, but Porzingis’ NBA future has never looked more uncertain.
