New additions bring excitement to Georgia, but will they be enough to lift the Hawks from the mediocrity of recent seasons?

Just weeks after EuroBasket, we are already into the NBA preseason, and as every year, we’ll analyze each team in detail to see what to expect from the 2025-2026 season.

Let’s start with the Atlanta Hawks, who have been major players in the market with the valuable acquisition of Kristaps Porzingis and are eager to escape the mediocrity they’ve been trapped in for several seasons.

At the end of the article, you can consult all the guides to the 30 NBA teams by accessing the Guide Index.

Key Players

Aside from a forgettable social media episode with Patrick Beverley, Trae Young (G, 17.5 cr) is rarely talked about enough. The lack of growth, especially in terms of defense, often overshadows his 25 points and 12 assists per game. However, with his strong desire for redemption after a less-than-stellar season and the renewed ambitions of the Hawks, “Ice Trae” certainly earns his spot among the top guards in our Fantasy Basketball.

Benefiting from his assists will be an unlikely pairing of bigs: Jalen Johnson (F, 13.5 cr) and Kristaps Porzingis (F, 13.0 cr) seem to complement each other perfectly. Johnson is a dominant force in the paint with excellent ball handling, while the Latvian big man offers unparalleled spacing skills for players at his position, providing consistent offensive production at the cost of a defense that still needs refinement.

Players to Avoid

In an offensively-minded lineup, Dyson Daniels (G, 11.0 cr) is likely to take on the role of a defensive specialist, sacrificing some of the shots he took last season. His value on the court is unquestionable, but in terms of Dunkest, especially early in the season, the 11 credits represent too high a risk.

Possible Surprises

EuroBasket closed out a forgettable first year among the top for Zaccharie Risacher (F, 7.5 cr), but the Frenchman promises to bounce back immediately with the Hawks: the added offensive talent will give him more favorable matchups, and his decent shooting percentages from the second half of last season should help him blossom.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker (G, 6.5 cr) seems poised to continue his growth path, having impressed as a key reserve for the T’Wolves. Backup roles to Trae Young typically gather crumbs, but the investment by the management suggests that NAW will be more highly regarded in terms of playing time. In this context, 6.5 credits is a reasonable investment for such a talented player who will be the leader of the second unit.

Likely Starting Lineup

PG: Trae Young (Guard, 17.5 credits)

SG: Dyson Daniels (Guard, 11.0 credits)

SF: Jalen Johnson (Forward, 13.5 credits)

PF: Kristaps Porzingis (Forward, 13.0 credits)

C: Onyeka Okongwu (Center, 13.0 credits)

Power Ranking

We like this revamped version of the Hawks, especially in an Eastern Conference that’s relatively weak. The regular season should bring plenty of satisfaction for Young and company, and a playoff spot seems assured.

However, the postseason might present insurmountable challenges, particularly due to the shaky defensive setup in the frontcourt.
