The Miami Heat made the biggest move of the summer, acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo in a blockbuster trade that reshapes both their roster and the landscape of the entire NBA.

That surge of excitement, after years of stagnation and struggles, has energized the entire organization: will it be enough to compete for the title right away?

At the end of the article, you can check out all the guides to the 30 NBA teams by visiting the Guide Index.

Dunkest NBA Fantasy Basketball is the most-played FantaNBA game in Italy, with more than 200,000 fantasy coaches competing every year since 2013 through points, assists and rebounds. It is free and can be played through the iOS app, Android app and Website.

Key players

Giannis Antetokounmpo (F, 25.0 cr.) was handed the keys to the franchise the moment he arrived: his first Preseason appearance lasted just 14 minutes but included 7 assists, immediately showing how central he will be to the team’s system, with coach Spoelstra building a dense network of shooters capable of taking advantage of the wide-open spaces that will inevitably be created.

Compared with his years in Milwaukee, the faster pace and greater amount of talent around him could also allow him to post several triple-doubles, especially since he will primarily operate as a point forward.

This will be the season in which Bam Adebayo (C, 15.0 cr.) takes on definitive responsibility: after a year in which he dominated within a fast-paced but limited offense, he will now have to adapt to Giannis’ presence and diversify the areas from which he operates offensively. In other words, maintaining a 20+10 double-double average will be almost impossible, but he could still deliver a few surprises from the perimeter, where he has been stepping out with increasing consistency.

Potential surprises

The resurgent Klay Thompson (G, 6.0 cr.) may have found a new place to blossom: with limited pressure and plenty of space available on the perimeter, we have little doubt that he can return to being the ruthless sharpshooter he was during his golden years in the Bay.

As has often happened in the past, appearances with the Swedish national team have brought renewed attention to the talent of Pelle Larsson (G, 7.5 cr.): so far, he has never fully translated it to the NBA, but last season’s 11.4 points per game and Giannis’ publicly expressed confidence in him offer hope that this may finally be the right time.

Players to avoid

Bobby Portis (F, 8.0 cr.) will suffer, like many of the big men on the roster, from a frontcourt clogged by two untouchable starters. Reduced minutes and limited defensive ability make him a poor fit in the new Heat system; given his notoriously fiery temperament, the locker-room and environmental aspect will also be crucial to his integration in Miami.

Projected starting five

PG: Davion Mitchell (Guard, 9.0 Credits)

SG: Klay Thompson (Guard, 6.0 Credits)

SF: Andrew Wiggins (Forward, 10.5 Credits)

PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo (Forward, 25.0 Credits)

C: Bam Adebayo (Center, 15.0 Credits)

Power Ranking

For once, the Miami Heat enter the season among the favorites; Giannis’ arrival alone would be enough to put them in that category, but the supporting cast the front office has assembled around him looks ideal for maximizing his strengths: plenty of shooters, capable defenders and versatile options off the bench give coach Spoelstra an almost perfect machine.

Bringing the group together and competing for the title from Year 1 will be difficult, but the amount of talent on the roster will still make them major contenders.
