Ja Morant to the Timberwolves: Possible Trade Scenarios

The Timberwolves – and not only them – are keeping an eye on Ja Morant: the situation in Memphis could soon open up some trade opportunities

Ja Morant Grizzlies

While the Ja Morant saga continues to stir discussion in Memphis, a new rumor has started to spread – the Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly among the teams interested in exploring whether the Grizzlies’ star might actually become available. According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, several franchises are closely monitoring the situation.

Sources within the Timberwolves organization have reportedly confirmed that the front office is “alert” to developments in the Morant case, though for now they’re only in the observation phase. Alongside Minnesota, the Sacramento Kings are said to be potentially interested as well, while the Houston Rockets appear to be out of the picture.

A Dilemma Called “Point Guard”

The reason for Minnesota’s interest is straightforward: the point guard spot remains the roster’s most fragile area. Mike Conley, 38, can’t shoulder heavy minutes for an entire season; Bones Hyland has been inconsistent, and 20-year-old Rob Dillingham still has to prove he can handle the NBA’s pace – especially physically.

In this context, adding a playmaker like Morant – despite his complicated reputation – becomes an intriguing possibility. Journalist Jon Krawczynski, who’s well connected to the Timberwolves organization, suggested that the front office could look in that direction if the situation at point guard isn’t resolved by January.

Tim Connelly is an aggressive executive. If a shake-up is needed, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Wolves explore the Morant option. I don’t think it’s likely, but it’s something to keep an eye on.

Potential Trades for Ja Morant

Ja Morant’s future in Memphis could take surprising turns if the Grizzlies decide to engage in trade talks. The potential trades listed below – proposed by the No Dunks podcast – offer very different perspectives on the Memphis star’s possible destination.

  • Atlanta Hawks: A direct swap for Trae Young would create a fascinating exchange between two of the league’s most explosive point guards.
  • Sacramento Kings: They could prioritize depth, offering a package of DeMar DeRozan, Malik Monk, and a first-round pick – giving Memphis experience, shooting, and a future asset.
  • Miami Heat: With Tyler Herro and an $8.4 million trade exception, the Heat could balance offensive talent with salary flexibility.
  • Toronto Raptors: A package featuring Immanuel Quickley, Gradey Dick, and a first-round pick could help them accelerate their rebuild around Morant.
  • Minnesota Timberwolves: They could put Rudy Gobert and Rob Dillingham on the table – giving Memphis elite defense and long-term potential.

Morant to the T’Wolves: a complex negotiation

Morant’s contract – worth over $40 million per year for the next two seasons – makes any trade scenario difficult without including major salaries. Minnesota would likely have to part with a core player such as Rudy Gobert, Julius Randle, Naz Reid, or Jaden McDaniels.

Each option, though, comes with problems: Gobert wouldn’t fit Memphis’ roster, already anchored by Zach Edey and Jaren Jackson Jr.; Randle and Reid were just extended; and McDaniels is the perfect complement to Anthony Edwards – nearly untouchable.

In short, this isn’t an imminent trade but rather a signal of interest. Still, the fact that Morant’s name is starting to surface around Minnesota isn’t a coincidence.

Morant: Talent and Shadows

After conquering the NBA with his athleticism and energy, Ja Morant’s image has been tarnished by off-court incidents that hurt his reputation. Yet, respect among players remains high: he recently shared that Kyrie Irving supported him during tough times.

For the Timberwolves, Morant would be a high-risk, high-reward gamble – the kind of player who can change a franchise’s fate… or make it even more complicated.
