What’s Next for LeBron James? Retirement Isn’t the Only Option

The current Los Angeles Lakers star will face a major decision at the end of the season. What will LeBron James choose for next year?

The questions circulating among insiders and around the league are the same as in recent years: will LeBron James retire at the end of the season or keep playing for another year? And if he does return, where will he play?

The options on the table are many – and all intriguing.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers have been LeBron’s team since the 2018-19 season, a journey highlighted by the 2020 NBA championship in the Orlando bubble. After up-and-down years, the current balance sees Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves as the primary offensive weapons, with LeBron supporting as a playmaker.

This offseason, the Lakers will evaluate a potential five-year, $241 million contract for Reaves, a key piece alongside Doncic. GM Rob Pelinka has reiterated that it would be an honor to see LeBron retire as a Laker.

Golden State Warriors

The idea of LeBron James joining the Golden State Warriors continues to surface in rumors, with the possibility of pairing him with Kawhi Leonard and Stephen Curry. The two already played together at the 2024 Paris Olympics, winning gold.

This scenario would reunite LeBron with Steve Kerr and Draymond Green, without ruling out the presence of Jimmy Butler, currently sidelined with injury.

I’m not very involved in the situation, but I know how much he can still give to the NBA, and that impacts every team in the league. When he retires, we’ll miss him a lot. We shared a great experience in Paris, and it’s something that will stay with us forever

Cleveland Cavaliers

A return home would represent the perfect ending to LeBron’s playing career: drafted No. 1 overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003, before returning in 2015 after his stint with the Miami Heat.

LeBron delivered the franchise’s first-ever Larry O’Brien Trophy in 2016, and since his departure, fans in Ohio have continued to hope for his return.

There could be a sign-and-trade scenario that the Cavs and Lakers are able to complete, which would bring to LeBron James

Dave McMenamin

This could also open the door to a sign-and-trade between Cleveland and Los Angeles, with Jarrett Allen mentioned as a potential return piece to bolster the Lakers’ frontcourt.

New York Knicks

Madison Square Garden remains LeBron’s favorite arena, and New York Knicks fans would be thrilled to see him in the Big Apple. However, adding LeBron could disrupt the team’s carefully built chemistry, posing a significant risk for both sides.

Denver Nuggets

A move to the Denver Nuggets would create a dominant duo with Nikola Jokic, alongside Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon, forming a lineup that would be extremely difficult to stop. There were already attempts in 2018 to bring LeBron to Denver, though without success.

This option might represent the most competitive path toward a fifth NBA title for LBJ.

The outcome of the 2026 NBA postseason will be decisive in shaping the future of LeBron James, one of the central storylines of the upcoming NBA offseason.
