Doc Rivers Leaves Bucks: “I Could Have Done Better”

Doc Rivers’ stint in Milwaukee is over after injuries, early playoff exits, and locker-room issues pushed the Bucks to change course for the third time in three years

Doc Rivers’ overall record with the Milwaukee Bucks ends at 97 wins and 103 losses, including two first-round playoff exits and a final season that ended without even a postseason or play-in berth.

But the numbers only tell part of the story. According to internal sources, tension reportedly built throughout the year between Rivers and the locker room, with several incidents creating frustration among players.

In a recent interview, Rivers himself acknowledged the difficulties:

The season didn’t go the way I wanted. I could have done a better job. There were health issues and a lot of complicated situations. But I don’t like looking back – you have to move forward

From Midseason Hire to Injury-Plagued Collapse

Rivers arrived in Milwaukee in January 2024, replacing Adrian Griffin, who had been fired despite a strong 30-13 record.

From there, the team never truly found momentum:

  • 17-19 to close the 2023-24 season
  • 48-34 in his first full year (2024-25)
  • Collapse to 32-50 in 2025-26

Injuries played a major role, especially to the team’s two stars:

  • Giannis Antetokounmpo, limited to just 36 games in the final season
  • Damian Lillard, frequently unavailable during key stretches of previous playoff runs

A context that made any attempt at continuity extremely difficult.

End of an Era That Began With the 2021 Title

The Bucks’ current trajectory now feels far removed from the championship peak reached in 2021 under Mike Budenholzer. Since then:

  • No playoff series wins after 2022
  • End of a streak of nine consecutive postseason appearances

A clear sign that Milwaukee’s championship window, at least in its previous form, has closed.

What’s Next for Rivers and Milwaukee?

Despite stepping down as head coach, Rivers – newly inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2026 – could remain within the organization in a front-office or advisory role.

Meanwhile, the Bucks must now determine their long-term direction: full rebuild, or one more attempt around the core led by Giannis Antetokounmpo.

A decision that will define the franchise’s next chapter.
