Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future will be decided before the NBA Draft

The Milwaukee Bucks want clarity on Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future before the NBA Draft. Jimmy Haslam spoke openly about the situation and left every scenario on the table

There is no more appetite for waiting in Milwaukee. After a difficult season filled with injuries and results far below expectations, the franchise wants to quickly understand what the future holds for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Co-owner Jimmy Haslam made that clear.

During the introductory press conference for new head coach Taylor Jenkins, Haslam explained that the Bucks want a final decision before the upcoming NBA Draft.

Before the Draft feels like the natural time to figure everything out. If Giannis were to leave, then we would need a lot of assets in return. If he stays, roster construction changes completely

Those words carry weight, especially because it is the first time Milwaukee ownership has spoken so openly about the possibility of parting ways with its superstar.

Giannis wants to win: Milwaukee must convince him

Over the past few months, Antetokounmpo has never hidden his mindset. His connection with Milwaukee remains strong, but the priority is simple: competing for an NBA title.

After nine straight playoff appearances, the Bucks endured a disappointing season, finishing with a losing record and never truly looking like a contender. Injuries played a major role, starting with Giannis himself, who was limited to just 36 games – the fewest of his career.

In October, Milwaukee will be able to offer him a four-year, $275 million extension, but the front office does not want to reach that point without certainty.

We’ve always communicated directly with Giannis, and we know exactly where he stands. Over the next six or seven weeks, we’ll understand whether he’ll sign the max extension to stay with us or whether he’ll play elsewhere

Taylor Jenkins starts fresh in Milwaukee

Meanwhile, the Bucks have chosen their new head coach: Taylor Jenkins will lead the team next season.

The former Memphis Grizzlies coach arrives after six years in Tennessee, where he built a young and competitive team, reaching three straight playoff appearances from 2021 through 2023.

Jenkins already knows the Bucks organization well, having worked on Mike Budenholzer’s staff during the years Giannis won his MVP awards. And the relationship between the two already appears strong.

Giannis showed great enthusiasm for me and for my family. We built a great relationship during my previous time in Milwaukee

Taylor Jenkins

Even so, the new coach understands that his project could begin without the face of the franchise.

Milwaukee faces a historic decision

From the 2021 NBA title to today, Giannis has become the face of the Bucks, rewriting virtually every franchise record. That is why a potential departure would represent one of the biggest moments in recent NBA history.

Haslam, however, wanted to maintain a clear stance.

Giannis brought a title back to Milwaukee after 50 years. He’s an extraordinary player and an extraordinary person. We’ll do what’s best for him and for the organization. We still don’t know whether he’ll stay or not, but we’ll figure it out together in the coming weeks

Jimmy Haslam

Now all attention shifts to the NBA Draft. Because Milwaukee’s future – and perhaps the balance of the league itself – may hinge on the decision of Giannis Antetokounmpo.
