Jason Kidd fired by the Dallas Mavericks: “It was the right time”

The Dallas Mavericks and Jason Kidd are parting ways after five seasons. Masai Ujiri’s desire to take the franchise in a new direction after recent turbulence proved decisive

Jason Kidd, coach dei Dallas Mavericks

After five seasons, Jason Kidd’s run as head coach of the Dallas Mavericks has officially come to an end. The Texas franchise announced the separation Tuesday night, describing it as a “mutual decision”, though the story behind the departure appears to go much deeper than a simple handshake.

The arrival of Masai Ujiri as the new President of Basketball Operations completely shifted the internal balance of power. Owner Patrick Dumont gave him full decision-making authority, and one of his first major moves was ending the partnership with Kidd.

In the team’s official statement, Ujiri made the franchise’s direction very clear:

We believe this is the right time to take the team in a new direction. Expectations around this franchise are high, and we have a responsibility to build an organization capable of consistently competing for a championship

One NBA Finals run, then the collapse

Kidd’s tenure with the Mavericks was filled with highs and lows. In 2022, Dallas reached the Western Conference Finals, and in 2024 the team made a run all the way to the NBA Finals. It looked like the beginning of a long-term project, but everything changed just a few months later.

The trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2025 completely reshaped the franchise’s future. In return, Dallas received a package headlined by Anthony Davis, a move that turned into a disaster both on the court and within the organization.

Kidd consistently maintained that he only learned about the Doncic trade “at the last minute”, rejecting claims that he had any direct involvement in the decision. Despite that, his frustration with the Slovenian star’s conditioning issues had reportedly become known internally.

Kidd left out of key decisions

According to multiple reports, Kidd wanted a larger front-office role after Harrison’s departure, targeting the position of President of Basketball Operations. That possibility had reportedly already been ruled out by Dumont.

Kidd was also left out of the process that led to Ujiri’s hiring — a fairly clear sign that ownership was already envisioning a different future.

During his introductory press conference, Ujiri stopped short of guaranteeing Kidd’s future with the organization:

He’s done a great job, but we’re going to evaluate this organization from top to bottom. That’s the proper way to assess every aspect

At that point, the writing was already on the wall.

The lasting bond with Dallas

Despite the difficult ending, Jason Kidd’s connection with Dallas will remain special. Drafted by the Mavericks in 1994, Kidd became one of the franchise’s defining figures and also played a major role in the team’s historic 2011 NBA championship.

As head coach, he closes his Dallas tenure with a regular-season record of 205-205 and a playoff record of 22-18.

Now Dallas begins its search for a new leader. Ujiri has promised a “thorough and disciplined” process. After one of the franchise’s most difficult seasons in recent years, Mavericks fans are expecting answers – and quickly.
