Giannis Antetokounmpo to the T-Wolves with Edwards: potential trade scenarios

Giannis Antetokounmpo and Anthony Edwards together in Minnesota? A dream pairing that could reshape the Western Conference, with multiple trade scenarios now emerging

After having their hopes of a third straight Western Conference Finals appearance crushed by the San Antonio Spurs, a question has started circulating inside the Minnesota Timberwolves front office: is it time to go superstar hunting? And what if that superstar is Giannis Antetokounmpo?

After watching Victor Wembanyama dominate the Thunder with overwhelming control and aggression – putting up 41 points and 24 rebounds in a double-overtime thriller – the T-Wolves have likely started asking themselves how they can become more competitive and close the gap separating them from the top two teams in the Western Conference.

Coach Chris Finch’s team needs a physically dominant player capable of protecting the rim while also serving as an offensive anchor alongside Anthony Edwards.

Minnesota’s elimination in the semifinals at the hands of Wembanyama’s Spurs made it clear that the Timberwolves don’t yet have the complete package needed for a championship run – especially considering major injuries such as Donte DiVincenzo’s. According to reports, the organization appears ready to reshape the core of the roster.

It’s shaping up to be a scorching summer for the Minnesota Timberwolves, who are fully committed to pursuing a blockbuster trade: Giannis Antetokounmpo remains their top target

What Minnesota can offer for Giannis

If there’s one certainty surrounding this Timberwolves offseason, it’s that the phones will be ringing nonstop. And take a guess which names will come up in nearly every trade conversation: Rudy Gobert and Julius Randle. Their nightmare series against San Antonio certainly didn’t boost their value, but we’re still talking about two high-level players capable of producing at an All-Star level on the right night.

The real anxiety for Minnesota’s front office begins when looking at the franchise’s young assets. There’s no way around it: if you want to call Milwaukee and ask about Giannis Antetokounmpo, you can’t show up with pocket change. The Bucks are going to demand a major return, meaning one among Jaden McDaniels, Naz Reid, Joan Beringer, or Terrence Shannon Jr. could end up packing their bags.

Figuring out who – and how much – to sacrifice becomes the biggest game of the summer. Just to paint a hypothetical picture: a package involving Shannon Jr. plus three first-round picks could potentially serve as a starting point for a franchise-altering deal.

Heat and Warriors also on Giannis

This is where the story gets even more interesting. The Timberwolves didn’t suddenly wake up obsessed with the Greek Freak. According to The Athletic, Minnesota has actually been at the top of Giannis’ preferred destinations list since last February’s trade deadline.

So why didn’t the blockbuster happen during the season? Simple: the T-Wolves weren’t able to put together an offer attractive enough to convince Milwaukee.

The Bucks knew that dragging the situation into the offseason would give them maximum leverage. Under the NBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, many restrictions loosen during the summer, allowing teams to include significantly more draft compensation in negotiations. In short, Milwaukee waited for the offseason to create a full-scale bidding war for the two-time MVP.

And the bidding war has officially begun because Minnesota isn’t alone. Two experienced sharks – the Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors – are also circling:

  • Miami’s offer: The Heat are reportedly prepared to structure a package around Tyler Herro, Andrew Wiggins, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., plus three future first-round picks.
  • Golden State’s response: The Warriors are ready to counter with a substantial package including Jimmy Butler, Moses Moody, Brandin Podziemski, and three first-round picks as a foundation.

The race for the NBA’s most valuable prize is officially underway. Who ends up pulling off the blockbuster?
