Lakers-Giannis, Shams Charania: “Milwaukee looking for better offers”

The Los Angeles Lakers continue monitoring Giannis Antetokounmpo’s situation, but according to Shams Charania, the Lakers’ current package may not be enough for the Milwaukee Bucks

Giannis Antetokounmpo Luka Doncic

The two biggest storylines of the upcoming NBA offseasonLeBron James’ final free-agency decision and the Milwaukee Bucks’ search for the best possible trade package to close the Giannis Antetokounmpo era – could end up intersecting and potentially be resolved within a matter of days, pairing another superstar with Luka Doncic.

While it’s true that the Los Angeles Lakers remain among the most active teams trying to put together a package capable of bringing the Greek superstar to California and entering next season with a roster already positioned to contend despite the increasingly likely departure of LeBron, their return package may ultimately fall short.

Cooling expectations surrounding the Lakers scenario were also the latest comments from Shams Charania, who shared the most recent information available to him on ESPN.

The Milwaukee Bucks are officially open to discussions. They’re talking with several teams… they’ll make a decision before the NBA Draft

The Bucks front office, the ESPN insider explained, is simply acting on a reality that has been developing for several months.

The first thing you need to understand about this entire situation is that Giannis Antetokounmpo, for several months now, has made it very clear to the Bucks and everyone involved that he believes it’s time for a separation

So who have the Bucks started engaging with? Charania outlined an early roadmap and focused on the not-so-simple possibility of a new chapter in purple and gold.

Expect teams like Miami, Minnesota, Boston, and Los Angeles. The Lakers expressed interest in Giannis at the trade deadline. Right now, what they can offer is three first-round picks and the ability to create more salary flexibility to absorb Giannis’ contract

Shams Charania

Considering the demanding asking price from Bucks GM Jon Horst – one that already derailed a potential trade last winter – the ESPN insider did not hide his doubts about a deal actually coming together.

Now, if you’re the Bucks, are you really trading Giannis to the Lakers just for some additional salary flexibility and three first-round picks? My feeling is they’ll explore better options on the market. I think there are more attractive offers out there. Time will tell, and we’ll know over the next six weeks

Shams Charania

What further weakens the Los Angeles Lakers’ negotiating position is an increasingly complicated contract situation, with a long list of expiring deals looming over the organization: from Austin Reaves’ player option – with the guard expected to command a major contract to remain in Los Angeles – to potential free agency decisions involving players beyond LeBron, including Luke Kennard, Rui Hachimura, and Jaxson Hayes.

Adding established players into a trade package alongside draft picks is also complicated by expensive contracts tied to past front-office miscalculations. The clearest example is Jarred Vanderbilt, who will earn $12 million in the second-to-last year of his contract alone. That’s why a Lakers-Giannis trade could ultimately become reality far away from Hollywood.
