Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies are ready to part ways

Ja Morant could be on his way out of Memphis after a season marked by injuries, disappointing numbers, and growing tension with the franchise

The 2025-26 NBA season was supposed to be Ja Morant’s comeback year – his revenge season, as they like to say in the United States. Instead, it may have been the season that revealed a difficult truth: the electrifying player who captivated the league a few years ago might no longer exist.

The former Murray State star’s numbers tell the story. Morant averaged 19.5 points per game, shooting 41% from the field and 23% from three-point range – both career lows – while adding 3.3 rebounds and 8.1 assists. The most concerning issue, however, was his availability. He appeared in just 20 games during the 25/26 and only 79 total games over the last three years, as recurring injuries continued to limit both his presence and production.

The reasons behind this disappointing season extend well beyond the court. Throughout the year, multiple reports surfaced regarding friction between Morant and head coach Tuomas Iisalo, whom the point guard reportedly accused of trying to reduce his control of the ball in favor of a faster, more team-oriented offensive system. In addition, Morant allegedly showed little willingness to grow as a professional and teammate, further fueling increasingly visible tensions with the front office.

According to Evan Sidery, the relationship between the Memphis Grizzlies and Morant has now reached a breaking point. Despite the fact that the guard’s trade value is considered to be at an all-time low – with some comparing it to the current value of Trae Young – the Tennessee franchise is reportedly prepared to move him within the next month and begin a new era. The organization’s plan would be to build around the future No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming draft, a selection that is widely expected to become Cameron Boozer.

Leaving the franchise that drafted him and stood by him through some of the most challenging years of his career could represent Morant’s final major opportunity to prove he can still become the player many once believed would be one of the faces of the NBA.

A chance to change the trajectory of a career that, today, appears to be heading in a very different direction than anyone imagined just a few years ago.
