Tyler Herro to the Pistons: the final piece in Detroit’s NBA title pursuit?

The Detroit Pistons no longer want to be viewed as a feel-good story. The project has matured enough for an aggressive all-in move, and Tyler Herro could be the gamble that takes them to the next level

The impressive regular season put together by the Detroit Pistons likely did not create any false illusions among fans and believers in the franchise’s new era.

With an average age of just 24.6 years – the third-youngest team in the league – and only one playoff appearance ending in a first-round exit, the team coached by J.B. Bickerstaff closed the season with mixed feelings after years of rebuilding. There was disappointment, but also a significant amount of valuable experience gained.

Two Game 7s, with opposite outcomes, can teach more lessons and build more confidence than an entire 82-game season. By the time next season begins, age may no longer be the primary factor used to evaluate the potential of this group.

The search for a reliable second option alongside Cade Cunningham could also intersect with the plans of other franchises. That is according to Evan Sidery of Sports Illustrated.

In recent hours, the well-known insider reported that the Pistons could serve as facilitators in the widely discussed Giannis Antetokounmpo trade scenario involving the Miami Heat, offering Caris LeVert and the No. 21 pick in the upcoming Draft in exchange for Tyler Herro.

With a return package totaling three first-round picks, the Milwaukee Bucks would then agree to complete the deal and officially move on from the Greek Freak.

The trade’s implications for Detroit: opportunity and risk

The scenario outlined by Sidery would allow the Pistons to raise their ambitions while keeping not only their core foundation intact, but essentially the entire nucleus built around Cunningham.

Despite the strong performances shown during Cunningham’s absences throughout the regular season, adding a second offensive creator with extensive NBA experience could represent a decisive step toward becoming a true contender.

Cunningham’s leadership is not in question, but a player like Herro would allow Detroit to maximize the prime years of its star by easing his offensive workload and scoring responsibilities. That, in turn, would enable Cunningham to consistently showcase his defensive impact and already elite playmaking ability.

On the other hand, caution is understandable when considering the integration of a player who is as talented as he is ball-dominant. Specialists such as Duncan Robinson and Kevin Huerter already appear capable of providing significant perimeter shooting, while Detroit’s defensive structure – evidenced by its second-place finish in the NBA in defensive rating – could initially suffer from Herro’s arrival before eventually finding a new balance.

The cost of surrendering a future asset could also prove substantial, particularly in a Draft considered exceptionally deep in both quality and talent, potentially leaving room for regret in the years ahead.

As always, no projection can determine with certainty whether the reward justifies the risk. Championship-caliber projects are often built on bold decisions, and a move like this would represent the first truly significant gamble of the Pistons’ new era.
