Trae Young re-signs with the Wizards: “I want to win in Washington”

Trae Young has made his decision, agreeing to a four-year contract worth approximately $212 million with the Washington Wizards. The deal reinforces the franchise’s long-term vision and confirms the star guard’s commitment to the organization

Trae Young’s free agency lasted only a matter of hours. The four-time NBA All-Star reached an agreement with the Washington Wizards on a new four-year contract worth roughly $212 million, which includes a player option in the final season.

To finalize the deal, Young declined his $49 million player option for the 2026-27 season – a move that, rather than signaling a possible departure, paved the way for a longer and more structured extension.

The contract comes in slightly below the absolute maximum the Wizards could have offered him, but it matches the highest figure he could have received elsewhere. A clear indication that this was never just about the money.

A commitment to the Project

Young had already identified Washington as his preferred destination back in January, when he arrived from the Atlanta Hawks in the trade that sent CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert to Georgia. That preference has now turned into a long-term commitment.

Without losing sight of Anthony Davis, the Wizards are building a young core around Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George, Tre Johnson, Will Riley, and Bub Carrington, with the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft set to join the group. In this environment, Young is far more than a marquee name – he is the point guard tasked with orchestrating the entire offense.

The voices behind the deal

General manager Will Dawkins explained the organization’s vision and highlighted the impact Young can have on the court:

In the limited games Trae was able to play, it was immediately clear how much offensive gravity he creates and how he’s able to generate space for his teammates

Will Dawkins

Dawkins also addressed the broader direction of the franchise, emphasizing the belief that both Young and Davis will enter next season highly motivated and capable of forming an All-Star duo that can help return the Wizards to playoff contention.

We’re looking for players who genuinely want to be in Washington, compete together, and have something to prove. Those are the types of players we want to build around

Will Dawkins

Young himself made it clear that he shares those ambitions:

I know our team will be ready. We have young guys who have been through the entire rebuilding process, who’ve lost a lot over the last few years and are tired of losing. I want to be with them when the wins start coming

Trae Young

A $212 million contract does not automatically translate into victories. But in Washington, the blueprint is clear: Trae Young as the leader, Anthony Davis as the anchor in the paint, and a top Draft pick joining a group that has already shown promising foundations.

The Wizards’ new era starts here.
