Jaylen Brown and the trade rumors: Stevens says, “He’s important to us, but…”
Despite ongoing trade speculation, the Celtics continue to view Jaylen Brown as one of the franchise’s cornerstones. Brad Stevens, however, stopped short of making any promises about the future
Trade rumors surrounding Jaylen Brown continue to swirl, but the message coming from the Boston Celtics remains clear. Following days of speculation and scenarios involving the Celtics star, president of basketball operations Brad Stevens emphasized just how important Brown remains to the organization.
Stevens made his comments on draft night shortly after Boston selected Chris Cenac Jr., and only hours after reports linked the Celtics to a potential move for Giannis Antetokounmpo. The deal never materialized, as the two-time MVP was ultimately traded to the Miami Heat, but Brown’s name remained at the center of discussions.
Brad Stevens: “Jaylen Brown has always been valuable to us”
While avoiding specifics regarding the trade talks that surfaced over the past several weeks, Stevens publicly reaffirmed his confidence in the 1996-born forward.
Jaylen Brown is a big part of us… obviously, you never know. The one thing I want to make very clear is how appreciated he has always been… I don’t want to predict the future, but that’s how I see it: this is our team
Brad Stevens
Stevens also revealed that he has met with Brown multiple times throughout the offseason, as he routinely does, while maintaining open communication with the player’s representatives.
When your name is everywhere in rumors and trade speculation, it’s not easy. We’ve tried to be as transparent as possible. We’ve had honest and very positive conversations. I’ll always keep those discussions private, regardless of their content
Brad Stevens
He added that the Celtics prefer to operate away from the spotlight, even while acknowledging that the NBA rumor mill inevitably creates constant media noise.
I don’t like when everything becomes a public topic. We always try to keep things as private as possible, but trade rumors are part of the business and they’re going to continue
Brad Stevens
The future remains uncertain
Over his ten years in Boston, Brown has become one of the defining faces of the franchise: five All-Star selections, six Eastern Conference Finals appearances, two NBA Finals trips, and the 2024 NBA championship, where he was named both NBA Finals MVP and Eastern Conference Finals MVP.
It is a résumé that has cemented him as one of the most important players in recent Celtics history. And yet, despite all of that, his future remains an open question.
Whether his time in Boston ends ten years from now when he retires, or sooner, there’s already so much to celebrate. We have an excellent and very open relationship, but I don’t want to predict the future
Brad Stevens
Brown still has three guaranteed years remaining on the five-year extension he signed in 2023 and will soon become eligible to discuss a new contract. In the meantime, however, trade speculation shows no signs of slowing down, and the Celtics continue to listen to proposals from around the league.
It is a situation worth monitoring closely, because one of the NBA’s biggest stars could remain at the center of offseason headlines in the weeks ahead.
