The Boston Celtics had emerged as the leading candidate to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo, overtaking the Miami Heat in the race for the Milwaukee Bucks superstar.

According to NBA TV insider Chris Haynes, discussions had intensified significantly over the previous 48 hours, with Milwaukee’s front office aiming to finalize a deal before draft night.

The framework of the trade centered around Jaylen Brown, the Celtics’ All-NBA wing, whose inclusion in the package was expected to be the key component needed to complete the transaction.

Brown addressed the growing speculation surrounding his future during a summer livestream while training alongside Olympic sprinter Noah Lyles. The Celtics star made it clear that his mindset remains unchanged regardless of what lies ahead:

I’ve been a top-five MVP candidate. I should have been No. 1, but the media votes on that. I’ve been an All-Star starter, All-NBA, and I keep raising the bar. Everyone thinks they’ve already seen the best version of me, and now they want to see me fail. I appreciate the people criticizing me online because it gives me energy. To everyone who has doubted me or wants me gone, I’ll just say this: you’re turning me into a monster

From a strategic standpoint, many around the league believed Boston’s offer could have surpassed Miami’s because of both its quality and structure.

In the Giannis trade, the Miami Heat were forced to part with a significant portion of their core – including young players and draft capital – to match the value of the two-time MVP. Boston, on the other hand, could have offered an elite asset such as Brown, already a Finals MVP, while keeping much of the roster intact – starting with Jayson Tatum – and remaining an immediate championship contender.
