Nikola Jokic situation: why the delayed extension isn’t worrying the Nuggets
Nikola Jokic’s future with the Denver Nuggets remains secure despite the delay in signing a contract extension. NBA insiders say the decision has nothing to do with a desire to leave Denver
When it comes to Nikola Jokić, it doesn’t take much to spark media speculation. This time, however, the absence of an immediate contract extension with the Denver Nuggets does not signal that an exit is on the horizon.
According to NBA insiders Mike A. Scotto of HoopsHype and Sam Amick of The Athletic, the decision to delay extension talks is driven by timing and contract strategy rather than dissatisfaction.
Even if Nikola Jokić decides to postpone extension talks for now, he has continued to express in recent conversations that he wants to remain in Denver for the long term

Sam Amick was also quick to dismiss any rumors of a potential departure:
As soon as the first reports surfaced that he might not sign the extension, speculation immediately followed. But based on what we’ve been told, Jokić continues to send clear signals that he wants to remain in the Mile High City beyond his current contract

Despite the attention surrounding the story, there is no sense of panic within the organization. The reason is simple: Jokić has repeatedly made it clear that he wants to spend his entire career with the Nuggets.
Our sources tell us the Nuggets remain very confident that his vision of being a ‘Nugget for life’ is still intact

Contract strategy: why waiting makes sense
From a financial standpoint, the situation is straightforward. Jokic is currently eligible to sign a four-year, $282 million extension, but he also has the option to wait.
Specifically:
- 2026-27 salary: approximately $59 million
- 2027-28 player option: approximately $62.8 million
- Potential maximum extension: approximately 4 years, $282 million
Waiting does not mean planning to leave – it simply gives him the opportunity to pursue an even more lucrative contract down the road.
And everything coming out of the situation points in the same direction: no tension, no trade request, just a decision to wait for the right time to sign.
At this point, the so-called “case Jokić” doesn’t really exist. The delayed extension with the Denver Nuggets appears to be a matter of timing rather than a sign of an impending departure.
Denver remains home to the three-time NBA MVP, and there is currently nothing to suggest otherwise.
