LeBron James and Stephen Curry on the Warriors? “The NBA brand would explode”
The Golden State Warriors are creating the cap flexibility needed for a blockbuster move to pair LeBron James with Stephen Curry. Stephen A. Smith believes the partnership would have a historic impact on the NBA’s global brand
Rumors surrounding a potential move that would send LeBron James to the Golden State Warriors continue to dominate the NBA conversation, but the latest reports suggest the deal hinges on a very specific and complex strategic plan.
According to ESPN insider Shams Charania, signing the four-time MVP would first require Golden State to complete a trade with the Washington Wizards for his former teammate, Anthony Davis.
That scenario immediately sparked reactions across the league, including from Stephen A. Smith. Speaking on his show, the ESPN analyst argued that pairing James with Stephen Curry would redefine the NBA’s popularity and commercial reach on a global scale.
Do you realize what a LeBron James and Steph Curry pairing would mean for ticket sales, television ratings, and the global popularity of the NBA brand? I’m not just talking about the United States or the domestic market – I’m talking about the entire world

In Smith’s view, even other marquee destinations – such as the defending champion New York Knicks or the San Antonio Spurs led by Victor Wembanyama – could not match the entertainment value and television appeal of seeing James and Curry wearing the same jersey.
If Charania’s reporting proves accurate, Golden State’s front office will first have to solve the financial side of the equation by finding a way to complete a deal with Washington.
The Warriors have already begun moving in that direction. Draymond Green’s decision to decline his $27.7 million player option creates additional financial flexibility, potentially allowing the franchise to use the $15.1 million mid-level exception as part of its effort to sign James.
At the same time, Kristaps Porzingis’ new two-year, $40 million contract has complicated those ambitions. Still, reuniting LeBron James and Anthony Davis – the duo that won the 2020 NBA championship in Los Angeles – within Stephen Curry’s system would represent the most significant basketball and business move of the past decade. According to league experts, the impact of such a blockbuster would extend far beyond wins and losses on the court, reshaping the NBA’s commercial landscape on a global level.
