Jokic delays Nuggets extension: “It’s strictly a financial decision”
There is no split on the horizon between Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets. The three-time MVP explained why he’ll wait before signing what could become the richest contract in NBA history
Denver Nuggets fans can breathe easy. Although a contract extension won’t be finalized anytime soon, Nikola Jokic made it clear that his goal remains unchanged: to spend the rest of his career in Denver.
Following Serbia’s FIBA World Cup qualifier, the three-time MVP spoke candidly about his future, emphasizing that his decision to delay signing a new deal has nothing to do with uncertainty about the franchise.
My plan and my desire are to stay in Denver. I’ll probably sign next year. The reason is strictly financial… then it also depends on whether they’re willing to offer me that contract. I want to play for the Nuggets for the rest of my career

Why Jokic is waiting to sign his extension
Since June 14, Nikola Jokic has been eligible to sign a four-year contract extension worth approximately $278 million with the Denver Nuggets. Instead, he has chosen to wait.
The reason is simple: by waiting until the summer of 2027, when he becomes a free agent, the Serbian center will be eligible to sign a five-year deal worth roughly $359.5 million, a contract projected to become the richest in NBA history.
It is a purely financial decision, one the Nuggets fully understand and one that has not created any concern within the organization.
