The Jaylen Brown trade that sent the Finals MVP to the Philadelphia 76ers sent shockwaves through Boston. Celtics President Brad Stevens explained the reasoning behind the decision and outlined the franchise’s new direction

The Boston Celtics’ decision to trade Jaylen Brown left a deep mark across the NBA. It was a difficult move, coming after years in which the 1996-born forward had become one of the faces of the franchise, culminating in a starring role in Boston’s 2024 championship run and earning NBA Finals MVP honors.

Brad Stevens, the Celtics’ President of Basketball Operations, addressed the reasoning behind the trade alongside owner Bill Chisholm, explaining one of the most significant decisions in the team’s recent history.

When I looked at our team and the direction the league was heading, while also considering how we finished the last few seasons and how dominant we had been during the regular season, the path forward seemed a little more complicated

Brad Stevens

Stevens also emphasized the financial and basketball burden tied to just two players – Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum – who accounted for a significant portion of both the salary cap and the team’s offensive responsibilities.

About 70% of our salary cap was tied up in two players. In today’s NBA, you have to build depth and find ways to replace what is individually irreplaceable

The end of the Tatum-Brown era: a painful decision for Boston

Breaking up Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown was no easy decision for the Celtics, especially considering everything they accomplished together. The duo became one of the most successful tandems in franchise history, reaching multiple NBA Finals before finally winning a championship in 2024.

Jayson and Jaylen had an incredible partnership. They complemented each other so well and played alongside great teammates. What they accomplished together was truly remarkable

Paul George, Draft picks, and the pursuit of greater flexibility

Stevens explained that including Paul George in the trade package was far from accidental. The veteran gives Boston a versatile player capable of filling multiple roles and providing another offensive option.

We like Paul. He’s a really good player. It wasn’t that long ago that we faced Philadelphia, and we saw how he can carry a team for stretches of a game while also thriving as a complementary player at the highest level on both ends of the floor

Brad Stevens

The future draft picks were another key component of the deal. Stevens acknowledged that fans may not immediately value second-round selections, but he believes the assets acquired could become valuable building blocks.

There are two potential premium assets. The value of those picks lies in their upside – they could become tremendous opportunities. Nobody knows just how valuable they’ll be

The trade wasn’t just about money

Owner Bill Chisholm made it clear that the decision to move Brown was not financially motivated. According to ownership, the priority remains singular: winning.

This absolutely wasn’t a financial decision. It was entirely about trying to win. Brad and his group came to the conclusion that this was the best path forward

Bill Chisholm

Chisholm also added that the Celtics will continue spending when opportunities arise to improve the roster.

It’s not about the money. We’ve created more flexibility, and if there’s something we want to do, Brad will have the green light

Stevens: “I lost sleep over this decision”

The reaction from the fan base was one of the toughest aspects of the process for Stevens. Brown arrived in Boston in 2016 and became one of the franchise’s defining players, with No. 7 jerseys filling the stands at TD Garden.

I lost sleep thinking about the fans. I get it – there are so many No. 7 jerseys out there. I probably bought a few myself. This wasn’t a decision for the faint of heart

Brad Stevens

When asked whether Boston is a better team after the trade, Stevens offered a simple response:

We’ll find out

Brad Stevens

Stevens made the organization’s objective clear: build a deeper, more balanced team with greater flexibility.

There will be a lot of small steps along the way as we build the depth and the kind of team we want to become. We’re not here to defend a decision that will certainly be criticized, but we’re also dealing with the emotions that come with Jaylen no longer being here

Brad Stevens

The split between Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics will remain one of the most debated trades of the NBA offseason. Now, the court will determine whether Boston’s gamble truly leads to the beginning of another championship era.
