Kawhi Leonard to Raptors on hold as NBA blocks trade with the Clippers

Kawhi Leonard will have to wait before returning to the Toronto Raptors. The NBA has suspended the trade with the Los Angeles Clippers pending the outcome of its investigation into the Aspiration case

Kawhi Leonard’s return to the Toronto Raptors will have to wait a little longer. The NBA has decided to delay the completion of the trade with the Los Angeles Clippers until its investigation involving the California franchise has concluded.

According to reports, the case centers on Joe Sanberg and the company Aspiration. The league is investigating whether there were any irregularities connected to Leonard’s contract. The Clippers, however, have firmly denied any wrongdoing, insisting they never used Aspiration to transfer money to Leonard and claiming they were themselves victims of a fraud orchestrated by Sanberg, who has since been sentenced to 14 years in prison.

In a statement provided to ESPN, the Los Angeles franchise said it has fully cooperated with the league over the past 10 months, participating in numerous interviews with investigators and turning over thousands of documents.

Raptors Would Have to Assume Any Potential Risk

The main issue now concerns the trade itself. The Clippers revealed that the agreement reached on June 30 can only be completed if the Toronto Raptors agree to assume responsibility for any potential consequences stemming from the NBA’s investigation.

The Raptors also confirmed the situation in an official statement.

The NBA league office informed us that, because of the ongoing investigation involving the Clippers, we would assume the risk of any potential consequences related to Kawhi’s contract

Despite this obstacle, the Raptors reiterated their commitment to bringing Kawhi Leonard back to Toronto and expressed confidence that the matter will be resolved as quickly as possible. The same optimism was echoed by the Clippers, who believe that once the investigation is complete, the NBA will confirm that the organization acted properly, clearing the way for the trade to become official.
