Victor Wembanyama signs extension with the Spurs: “I’m here to stay”
Victor Wembanyama has made his decision: his future remains with the San Antonio Spurs. The French superstar has signed a five-year, $252 million extension and even agreed to take less than the maximum salary to help the Spurs build a championship contender
Victor Wembanyama’s future will remain in Texas for years to come. The San Antonio Spurs star has agreed to a five-year, $252 million contract extension, keeping him with the franchise through 2032.
The new deal also includes a player option for the final season. The most notable aspect of the agreement, however, is Wembanyama’s decision to forgo the maximum salary. Rather than signing a deal worth as much as $303 million, the French star chose to accept 25% of the salary cap, giving up roughly $50 million to provide the Spurs with greater financial flexibility to build the roster.
The message he shared on social media left no room for interpretation:
Spurs family, I’m here to stay. I’ll do whatever it takes
Victor Wembanyama
A decision made to help the Spurs win
According to reports, San Antonio presented several contract structures, including a full maximum extension. In the end, however, it was Wembanyama himself who opted for a slightly smaller deal, believing that preserving additional cap space would help the organization assemble a championship-caliber roster in the years ahead.
To celebrate the agreement, team president Peter J. Holt, CEO R.C. Buford, general manager Brian Wright, and head coach Mitch Johnson traveled to Paris to meet with Wembanyama, his family, and his representatives.
An MVP-caliber season
The extension comes on the heels of a remarkable season for the French big man, highlighted by the Spurs’ NBA Finals appearance, where they fell to the New York Knicks in five games.
After Game 5, Wembanyama had already hinted at how meaningful the season had been for the team’s development:
It was an incredible year from an experience standpoint. I don’t think we could have learned more in a single season and one playoff run. It was tough, but it taught us so much
Victor Wembanyama
With this extension, the Spurs have secured not only their present but also their future. And the fact that Wembanyama willingly sacrificed part of his salary to give the team more flexibility speaks volumes about his mindset: his goal isn’t just to become a superstar – it’s to bring San Antonio back to the top of the NBA.
