Jalen Duren, contract talks with Pistons hit a standstill
According to ESPN insider Ramona Shelburne, Jalen Duren’s contract extension talks with the Detroit Pistons could remain stalled through the end of August
While NBA free agency has entered a quieter phase, attention is gradually shifting to Detroit. For a team that finished atop the Eastern Conference during the regular season, the internal situation has become surprisingly unstable, putting both the franchise’s short- and long-term ambitions at risk.
The biggest issue is the contract extension negotiations with Jalen Duren, which have been at a complete standstill for the past month. As a restricted free agent, the 2003-born center is seeking a maximum extension, but ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne revealed that talks could drag on until the end of August:
I don’t think this situation will be resolved anytime soon. I’ve spoken with sources close to the negotiations, and the talks involving Jalen Duren are at a standstill. It could take most of August. Teams interested in him, including the Lakers, got the clear impression that Detroit would match any offer sheet. The Pistons can’t afford to lose him, but this is going to take time because there’s no agreement on his true value and how that fits into the team’s roster-building plans

During the regular season, Duren was one of the Pistons’ cornerstones. He averaged 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and shot 65% from the field across 70 games, showcasing tremendous growth alongside Cade Cunningham.
However, the playoffs exposed a noticeable drop in production, as he averaged 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds while shooting 51.4% from the field through the first two rounds. That decline has reportedly made the front office more cautious about committing a massive contract that could restrict future salary cap flexibility.
With rival teams backing away after recognizing the Pistons’ willingness to match any offer, the possibility of Duren signing his one-year qualifying offer and testing the market as an unrestricted free agent next summer is becoming increasingly realistic.
Considering the recent departures of key role players such as Isaiah Stewart and Tobias Harris, losing – or even alienating – Jalen Duren could seriously undermine Detroit’s competitive window and hinder the continued development of Cade Cunningham.
