Could Stephen Curry leave the Golden State Warriors?
Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors appear to be growing further apart. After a disappointing 2026 NBA free agency, speculation is mounting that the two-time MVP could eventually move on
The Golden State Warriors are undoubtedly among the biggest losers of the 2026 NBA free agency. The front office failed to assemble a roster capable of turning the team into a legitimate championship contender. Just as concerning, the organization has projected the image of a franchise lacking a clear vision and direction throughout the offseason.
That inactivity hasn’t frustrated only fans and league observers – it has also reportedly disappointed the greatest player in Warriors history, Stephen Curry.
With time no longer on his side – he’ll turn 39 next season – Curry viewed this offseason as one of his final opportunities to help build a roster capable of competing for another NBA championship.
After the dream of teaming up with LeBron James fell through, however, something appears to have changed between Curry and Golden State. According to the latest reports, the front office has decided it’s time to begin planning for the post-Curry era, ending its pursuit of another superstar to pair with No. 30.
For his part, Curry has reportedly grown increasingly frustrated with the Warriors’ leadership, a feeling that has only intensified following the organization’s change in direction. Because of that, many insiders no longer rule out the possibility that this could be Curry’s final season in Golden State – especially if the franchise does not soon offer him a contract extension ahead of his current deal, which expires in 2027.
As unlikely as it once seemed, the possibility of Stephen Curry leaving the Warriors can no longer be dismissed. It’s clear that Curry remains one of the NBA’s elite players, fully capable of competing for another championship, while Golden State no longer appears to have the roster to do so.
Given the ambition of the greatest shooter in NBA history, it is no longer impossible to imagine a stunning split next summer.
For now, there’s no way of knowing whether these rumors will become reality. But if leaving the Golden State Warriors proves to be the only path that allows Stephen Curry to enjoy one final championship run worthy of his legendary career, then as painful as it would be, it might ultimately be the best outcome – for him, for the NBA, and for basketball fans everywhere.
