LeBron, Doncic and Reaves: Redick’s Dilemma, “Someone Has to Sacrifice”

Three stars, one basketball: the Lakers search for the formula to make LeBron James, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves work together

Balance is a simple word, but inside the Lakers’ locker room it carries serious weight. Putting three primary creators like LeBron James, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves together isn’t just a technical challenge – it’s about hierarchy, rhythm and sacrifice.

JJ Redick knows it well, and after the 110-101 win over the Pelicans, he offered a clear and constructive reflection on the coexistence of his Big Three.

The biggest challenge is when all three of them are on the floor together. They all want the ball… someone has to sacrifice

The talent is abundant, but there’s still only one basketball. And yet, beneath the surface of the debate, the numbers suggest the situation is far from alarming. With the trio on the court, the Lakers are 10-4 (a strong 74.2% win rate). Without James they’re 11-7; without Reaves 14-12; without Doncic 6-6. The most effective version remains the full lineup – even if it’s imperfect.

In the last seven games, for three of them it looked like the world was ending… and we’re still top 10 in offense and top 15 in defense

A sign that the structure is holding, especially since the team’s zone defense has boosted overall performance.

Time, however, is running short: 22 games to find the definitive formula. Because the issue isn’t only tactical. With LeBron’s future uncertain (GSW is looming) and reports suggesting a central role for Doncic and Reaves in offseason decisions, the on-court coexistence could turn into an organizational crossroads. Redick has promised in-season adjustments as the team moves toward the Playoffs:

We’ll continue to tweak things… we’ll give Austin more minutes with LeBron

If the chemistry clicks, Los Angeles can dream. Right now, the Lakers remain a work in progress.
