Durant passes Jordan on the NBA scoring list: “Four more to catch”

At 37, Kevin Durant continues to rewrite NBA history: after surpassing Michael Jordan on the all-time scoring list, Kobe Bryant is now in his sights

Kevin Durant has added another chapter to his personal legend. With 27 points in a 123-122 win over Miami, the Houston Rockets star surpassed Michael Jordan on the NBA’s all-time scoring list, moving into fifth place overall.

And while the crowd erupted to celebrate the milestone, Durant was already looking ahead with his usual composure:

Four more to catch

Passing Michael Jordan: a symbolic moment

Durant entered the game with 21 points through the first three quarters. Then, in the final stretch, he took over: first a three-pointer to close the gap, then the decisive basket – another three from nearly the same spot – to reach 32,294 career points, moving past Jordan by two.

A quick gesture, arms raised, and the crowd on its feet: an image destined to last.

When asked to share a memory related to Michael Jordan, Durant’s answer was simple yet meaningful:

It’s like asking me if I have a favorite Drake song. They’re all incredible. MJ represents an iconic, almost divine level. Everything I believe in about basketball, he embodies

Despite the historic achievement, Durant remains focused on the present:

It’s nice, but it’s hard to truly process it while you’re still on the journey. I’m just focused on getting better. Tomorrow I’ve got to get back to work

Kevin Durant

Head coach Ime Udoka also highlighted that mindset:

For him, it’s not the priority right now. He’s focused on the season. But passing Jordan is huge, and we had to celebrate it

Impact on teammates: the next generation watching

Among those in awe is Amen Thompson, who was born when Durant was just beginning his NBA journey:

It’s legendary. Playing with someone like him is inspiring. Watching him break these records is special

Amen Thompson

Fittingly, it was Thompson who decided the game with a game-winning putback after a missed shot by Durant in the final seconds – a symbolic passing of the torch between generations.

A legendary career still evolving

At 37 and in his 19th NBA season, Kevin Durant continues to break records. Earlier this season, he had already surpassed legends like Wilt Chamberlain and Dirk Nowitzki.

The next target is clear: Kobe Bryant, currently fourth on the list with 33,643 points.

Durant’s résumé already speaks for itself:

  • 2 NBA championships
  • 2 Finals MVPs
  • 1 MVP (2013-14)
  • 4 scoring titles
  • 16 All-Star selections
  • 4 Olympic gold medals

Numbers that firmly place him among the greatest players of all time.

Goal: breaking into the all-time top 3

Durant isn’t hiding his ambition – the climb isn’t over. The podium is within reach and, given his level of play, far from unrealistic.

The real question now is no longer if he’ll reach the top three, but when.
