The Sixers’ next move: LeBron James becomes the top target after landing Brown

Following the blockbuster deal for Jaylen Brown, Philadelphia has emerged as one of the leading contenders to sign LeBron James

In a move that caught the entire league by surprise, Philadelphia’s front office completed a blockbuster trade with the Boston Celtics to acquire former NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown, sending Paul George and a package of four future draft picks to Boston.

The impact of the deal, however, extends far beyond the value of the All-Star wing. According to Tony Jones of The Athletic, Brown’s arrival has turned Philadelphia into the hottest and most attractive destination for the most closely watched free agent on the market: LeBron James.

According to a league source who spoke anonymously to The Athletic about ongoing discussions, the Philadelphia 76ers have expressed interest in acquiring LeBron James

The timing of the move aligns perfectly with the official split between the four-time NBA champion and the Los Angeles Lakers.

James informed the Lakers that he will not return to Los Angeles for the 2026-27 season, effectively launching what many are calling “The Decision 4.0” in his two-decade NBA career. While LeBron’s camp has made it clear that his priority is basketball fit and immediate championship contention, rather than maximizing his contract, the competition remains fierce. The Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly in the mix for a stunning homecoming, while the Golden State Warriors continue pushing to pair him with Stephen Curry.

But after Philadelphia’s surprise acquisition of Brown, a core featuring Tyrese Maxey, rookie VJ Edgecombe, and Joel Embiid, now complemented by Brown’s two-way versatility and veteran presence on the perimeter, offers James an ideal basketball situation to chase another championship without carrying the entire offensive burden.

From a purely tactical standpoint, adding the future Hall of Famer to Nick Nurse’s frontcourt would complete a Super Team with no obvious weaknesses in its starting lineup.

The financial details and internal discussions within the 76ers organization remain closely guarded, but the franchise’s willingness to part with Paul George is a clear indication that Philadelphia is pushing all of its chips to the center of the table.
